Les Traboules sont ces petits passages entre les immeubles anciens qui abritaient les soyeux et leurs machines.
Les plafonds hauts permettaient de faire tenir des machines à tisser la soie de grande hauteur. Les appartements logeaient la famille entière et des ouvriers.
Les Canuts et leurs métiers à tisser ont depuis longtemps été remplacés par des machines et les vers à soie par le pétrole pour des tissus acryliques.
Les familles d’ouvrier ont aussi disparu, elles sont remplacées par d’autres populations, probablement plus aisées qui travaillent dans le secteur tertiaire.
Ce quartier qui a une histoire et dont on peut sentir l’âme se transforme petit à petit pour accommoder ces nouvelles populations. Magasins bios, familles à vélos ont remplacé les épiceries et les voitures.
Le quartier, comme dans beaucoup de grandes villes, s’embourgeoise et pousse au loin les populations pauvres.
La peinture en couches successives représentent la force de ces immeubles, la force des ouvriers. Ce sont des immeubles solides construits pour durer, construits pour supporter le poids des machines.

In the silences of the Traboules (Lyon, France)
The Traboules are the small passageways between the old buildings that once housed silk merchants and their looms.
The high ceilings made it possible to accommodate large silk-weaving machines. The apartments housed entire families, as well as workers.
The Canuts (names of the weavers) and their looms have long since been replaced by industrial machinery, and silkworms by petroleum-based materials used to make synthetic fabrics.
The working-class families have also disappeared, replaced by other, probably more affluent, populations working in the service sector.
This neighbourhood has a history, and you can still feel its soul. Yet it is gradually changing to accommodate these new residents. Organic shops and families on bicycles have replaced traditional grocery stores and cars.
Like many neighbourhoods in major cities, it is becoming increasingly gentrified, pushing poorer populations further and further away.
The painting, built up in successive layers, conveys the strength of these buildings, and the strength of the workers. They are solid buildings, built to last, designed to withstand the weight of the machinery.
