Le rouge brique des murs contraste sur le ciel gris, un peu jaunâtre de la ville.
On serait dans une atmosphère victorienne, chez Dickens, s’il n’y avait pas un des fameux « taxis londoniens » au premier plan.
J’ai utilisé du papier en sous couche sur la toile ce qui donne un aspect rugueux au tableau: les murs ne sont pas lisses, on sent des épaisseurs successives. On n’est pas dans un quartier chic, mais dans dans une bibliothèque de quartier ouvrier. (A l’époque, du moins!)
Les coups de pinceaux sont comme d’habitude en épaisseur, la peinture presque utilisée sans eau. On sent bien la matière.
Ce tableau fait partie de la période de « confinement », ce qui explique ces tons rouge et blanc laiteux en contradiction violente; cette absence de personnages: la ville est triste, enfermée sur elle même.

La peinture est recouverte d’un vernis acrylique de protection, qui fait ressortir les couleurs, surtout le rouge particulier des murs de brique. Avec système d’accrochage.

The public library in London is closed (March 2020) like all public houses in UK, France, Italy, Spain, most of USA…
Because I’m not able to travel to my beloved city (London) , I enjoy painting it at home.

We not only travel to London, but back in time, in a Dickens’ book (but for the taxi at the bottom of the painting)!

Dating probably from the Victorian area, this painting is a symbol of the opposition between two worlds: the rich and famous and the workers. Two separated worlds.
The opposition is characterized by a strong powerful choice of red colors on the building enhanced by the quasi monochrome milky white of the skies.

The strength of the Victorian workers is shown by the rough paint strokes that is synonym of my work. There is a smooth, false immobility in the painting, hiding a real violence.

Le 21 mars 2020 la Grande Bretagne fermait ses pubs à minuit.
Les pubs anglais, plus que nos bistrots français sont des institutions au RU.
Ces anglais qui « never surrender » ont plié devant le coronavirus qui touche tous les pays du monde.

For once Britain has surrendered against a vile virus: the Coronavirus.
Since then, like most of the big cities in the world, London is shutting-down to protect its people.
No more social gathering after work, no more friends with whom sharing a glass of wine or some beer.

Pub à Londres de nuit.
Londres, ses pubs, cette institution.
Cette ambiance à la Dickens… cette peinture est un retour à ma ville de coeur, à cette architecture que j’aime tant et à son passé.
Ici, on peut imaginer les « ladies » et « gentlemen » sortir d’un spectacle; on peut deviner les amis et les familles discutant des résultats d’un match de cricket autour d’une bière.
Malgré l’ambiance de nuit, j’ai utilisé des couleurs chaudes comme les rouges et les oranges pour adoucir et donner une atmosphère douce et paisible au sujet.

London, my favorite! I often paint this city because I feel particularly attached to it and because I love the architecture, the atmosphere and the people there.
In this painting I’ve represented a pub at night. Pubs there are an institution, a part of the city, a part of the culture.
At night this pub has an atmosphere of Dickens’ novels. We’ve been travelling in the past; ones can see ladies and gentlemen going to the theatre, friends and family gathering around a pint of lager.
The painting is dark, yet I wanted to convey the atmosphere of charm, of coziness, like in a novel. Far from all the turmoil of the real society I want to share with the art collector some peaceful and calm feeling. The oranges and light rose give the impression of warm and cosiness even in the night.

Dans cette peinture épurée, je voulais ne garder que l’émotion de ce soir d’été par la lumière du lustre de l’entrée et les ombres de la nuit.

A quiet spot : Un endroit tranquille
Prêt d’une petite église dans le Kent en Grande-Bretagne.
L’endroit est calme, les enfants sont à l’école, les habitants sont soit au travail soit à la maison.
Ce n’est pas encore la saison touristique dans ce petit village de bord de mer.
Vous vous attendez presque à voir Miss Marple assise sur un banc à tricoter ou Poirot qui visite ses amis dans le quartier.
Cela ressemble au décor d’un film. Fermez les yeux, le tournage va commencer.

It looks like the scenery of a movie. Just close your eyes, you are on the set.

Je voulais par ce tableau représenter les conséquences du réchauffement sur nos villes.
Londres, Amsterdam, Paris verront de plus en plus ce phénomène d’inondation, dans les métros, les maisons, les musées.

This painting could have been a funny amusing painting of a blue whale in a museum ‘the Natural history museum’ in London. But the topic is more to think about the consequences of our actions on the global warming.
Today in Thailand, tomorrow in London, New-York, Paris…
People will leave their home, museums will be deserted and abandoned because of the flood. There is no global warming, they say…

Une ville qui change constamment, qui construit, se renouvelle toujours.
Mais ce tableau n’est pas seulement un tableau d’architecture qui représente une ville qui change, c’est surtout un hommage à tous ces hommes qui construisent des immeubles, des maisons qu’ils ne pourront sans doute jamais s’offrir. Un hommage à tous ceux qui font des métiers durs, qui se lèvent tôt pour permettre aux autres de vivre mieux.

London July 2018 Another construction site, another new buildings. This city is always renovating itself, always moving and changing.
It looks like the re-development of an old factory, on the south part of the Thames: South Lambeth
But, this painting is not only about a city that changes, it’s also a tribute to all men who build houses and flats they probably never have enough money to live in.
A tribute to all people working early in the morning, having hard jobs for other people lives.
