Dans les ruelles du vieux Versailles: se promener dans les rues pavées de la ville de Versailles est un peu comme ouvrir un livre d’histoire de France. On se retrouve quelque siècles en arrière et on s’attend presque à entendre une calèche débarquer.
Lorsque Noël approche, les ruelles de la ville s’illuminent de couleurs et leurs couleurs répondent à celles des petites boutiques et des restaurant de la ville.
Les couleurs chaudes utilisées sont réhaussées par des touches de bleu chaud qui leur répondent.
Ce bleu casse le classicisme de la toile et donne du dynamisme et du peps à la ville qui s’endort.

In the old cobble-streets of Versailles, France
Versailles is well-known for the Palace of The French king: Louis 14th.
Everybody knows the tragic story of the last French king and Queen « Marie antoinette » but few tourists go on to visit the little streets of the town besides Versailles chateau.
And yet, it’s a travel back in time to walk in these cobble-stoned streets. In winter, the city is illuminated by lights that respond to the warm lights of the boutiques.
Because the painting was in my opinion too classic, I put by contrast some light in the way of a blue electric and warm. It enhances the other colors and give some peps to the painting.

La boutique du fleuriste du grand magasin « Liberty » à Londres.

Londres est une ville que j’aime et que je représente souvent. Je l’associe en général à des couleurs et à une vivacité de tons et une certaine exubérance. Ici, le tableau est plus intimiste, il y a une opposition entre l’extérieur (lumineux et coloré et l’intérieur du magasin chaleureux mais plus sombre).

Les coups de pinceaux caractéristiques de mon style donnent un mouvement dans cette scène calme. Les couleurs mi-brillantes, mi-sombres, découpées sur le noir, donne une impression de nostalgie. Enfin les teintes douces et orangées nous rappellent que l’automne est là, la fenêtre du magasin ressemble à celle d’un chateau hanté, Halloween se rapproche

The floral shop at Liberty store in London
This store is one of the most beautiful for me. Whenever I go to London I try to have a look at it, for the atmosphere and the pleasure of the eyes.
Here, I’ve painted the floral shop for the second time (The first was called Flower Power (sold). This painting has a certain atmosphere of melancholy brought by the pastel colours of the flowers surrounded by black painting.It’s the symbol of the melancholy of autumn, for me.
There is also a certain atmosphere between the outside of the building: the flowers are put on the pavement the colours are pastel and surrounded by pastel greys, and the interior of the building : orange like (it’s the representation of autumn, period of Halloween…)

The window of the store looks rather like a castel, supposedly haunted, of course!

Tous les artistes souffrent de cette année du coronavirus que ce soit à Paris, Londres ou New-York.

Ce tableau est donc une mémoire à l’art, un hommage à tous les arts et à tous ceux qui contribuent à offrir du rêve, de la couleur et du bonheur.

It took me a while to work on this painting because I’m not used to work with collage and I usually paint on canvas not on paper. But this topic on New-York using a real New-York’s newspaper was in my mind and it was a way to celebrate this beautiful city.
Using the Arts section of the newspaper was a tribute to people working in the show business, the theatre, musicals, galleries…

All the artists that suffer from this coronavirus sad year: the theatres are closed, the exhibitions are cancelled whether in New-York, Paris or London…

The style doesn’t vary a lot from my usual style even on paper; I use the painting almost without water, I wait for it to dry and then I add some finishing touches with ink or marker.

I have protected my painting by an acrylic varnish. The painting is stuck on a cartoon and framed.

Les librairies et les bibliothèques sont des lieux de culture, d’apprentissage, de curiosité, de rêves et d’espoir…
Avec un livre on ne se sent jamais seul; on peut le lire dans un fauteuil confortable, dans le métro, sur la plage.

La différence entre un livre et mes tableaux est que le livre raconte une histoire, vous imaginez les personnages et les lieux;
Avec mes tableaux, vous avez les lieux, parfois les personnages mais c’est vous qui imaginez l’histoire…

The fire station: La caserne de pompiers : Oxford; Grande-Bretagne

Ce tableau n’est pas seulement la représentation d’un très beau bâtiment de briques rouges à Oxford, probablement de l’époque victorienne. C’est aussi un hommage à ces hommes et ces femmes qui ont travaillé dur pour l’édifier: les familles de travailleurs pauvres qui fabriquaient les briques et les faisaient cuire, les ouvriers qui construisaient ces bâtiments.

C’est aussi un hommage à ces hommes et ces femmes qui risquent leur vie tous les jours pour nous protéger: les pompiers, qui vont sur les incendies, qui viennent à notre secours lorsqu’il y a un accident de la route, un attentat, un malaise, un cas de coronavirus! Ils font partie de notre quotidien, et je les salue et les remercie en leur rendant hommage avec ce tableau.

This is not only a beautiful building that reminds us of the past. Not only a link to the poor family of workers who made the bricks and the workers who built the building.

It’s also a tribute to the women and men who work everyday to help others, the people who put their life in danger to protect and save other people.

We’ve seen that especially during the covid-19 time, we understand their essential role everyday when there is a big crisis: New-York 11-09; California fires, road accidents…

Il existe encore à Paris des petits immeubles, comme celui là, coincés au fond d’une rue, pour peu que l’on lève la tête.
Il s’agit ici d’un immeuble dans le quartier de Passy (16ème arrondissement), pris entre un immeuble haussmannien et un autre immeuble ancient imposant.
Ce tableau est une mémoire, mémoire d’un immeuble perdu parmi les autres, mémoire d’une époque qui disparait, et d’une histoire qui sera remplacée par une autre.
Dans le cas présent, c’est l’histoire d’un petit immeuble qui sera sans doute remplacé par un immeuble plus moderne, plus élégant, et beaucoup plus cher au mètre carré.

Passy is a quartier chic at the West part of the capitale; it is still a « little village » where there are little bistrots and restaurants, small buildings and bourgeois houses.

There are still some old buildings like that in Paris, yet they tend to disappear, put down and another more modern and more expensive takes its place.
This old house is besides a « Haussmann » building (a special architectural style) that is very common in Paris.

This is a memory painting, a souvenir of some places that will not stay forever because the city is changing, because some investors will find a way to make more money by putting it down.
I want to keep it as a memory of ancient Paris before it disappears.

La serre du potager

Au détour d’une allée de graviers jonchée de pots renversés, il y a une serre envahie par les plantes sauvages et les fleurs odorantes.

Elle me renvoie à de lointains souvenirs, souvenirs de vacances, d’odeur de terre fraiche et de fleurs cultivées avec amour. Elle me renvoie à une époque lointaine et passée, sans doute en partie rêvée. Un souvenir d’enfant, un parfum mêlé de fleurs et de terre normande.

De style impressionniste, cette serre, loin d’être normande est une serre du « Potager du roi » à Versailles, peinte un soir d’été ensoleillé.

The vegetable garden’s greenhouse

At the end of an alley, there is a greenhouse swamped by wild scented flowers and plants.
It reminds me of past holidays. The souvenir of the scented flowers grown with love and the strong smell of the grass and the rich Normandy earth.
It’s a souvenir, perhaps a dream.

Impressionist like, this painting depicts a greenhouse in « Le Potager du roi » (the King vegetable garden » in Versailles, France on a summer day.

Au dessus de la violence, de la lâcheté et de la laideur humaine, une fleur de soleil et de vie se redresse fière et forte.

J’ai porté cette idée pendant longtemps : ces fleurs de ville qui sortent de tous les interstices urbains. Même si on ne trouvera probablement pas un tournesol au milieu du bitume, j’ai choisi cette fleur que j’aime, symbole de soleil et d’été.

Au milieu d’un monde brut, parfois sale, parfois sans foi ni morale, la nature reprend toujours ses droits.

Cette fleur se tient près d’un mur, dans une ville, elle se tient droite, face au soleil ; elle est un symbole de vie et de force.

Above the violence, ugliness and cowardice of the humankind, a flower, symbol of sun and life straightens itself, proud and strong.
The flower, symbol of life and strength straightens itself against a wall ; it‘s a city wall, the symbol of ugliness and the opposite of the notion of nature.

Etude pour Saint-paul Millenium: cette interprétationde la Cathédrale Saint Paul à Londres est plus libre, dans un style impressionniste moins détaillé que sa grande soeur.

J’aime cette liberté que j’ai prise à faire ce tableau en plus petite taille. Débarrassée des carcans du réalisme, je tend à me rapprocher de l’essentiel.

Une journée d’été au soleil de Paris, les immeubles concentrent dans leurs murs blancs la chaleur qui monte du bitume. Le ciel est presque blanc de cette chaleur lourde et collante.

Les parisiens se refugient à l’ombre des terrasses, dans les bistrots. C’est une scène d’avant confinement et coronavirus, une scène de bonheur et d’insouciance ; de rencontres et de partages.

It’s a summer day, one of these days where the sky is almost white with heat, where the heat seems to come from the surrounding buildings and from the asphalt of the streets.

Before the coronavirus, before the self-isolation periods it was one of these precious days of insouciance of pure happiness : a day to share a drink with friends and family at one the Parisian terrasses of a little bistrot protected from the scorching sun.
