La mise en perspective de cet Hotel Hyatt à New-York donne l’impression que l’immeuble va s’envoler, il semble atteindre le ciel. Le ciel lumineux qui fait se refléter les immeubles dans les murs de glace de l’hotel donne une double impression de puissance. Mais au lieu d’écraser le passant, il l’élève vers le ciel.

J’ai aimé cette série new-yorkaise particulièrement parce que j’ai ré-imaginé NY, ville que je n’ai jamais vu de visu, ce qui m’a permis de la réinventer de la modifier, de la reconstruire à mon gout! J’ai aimé vivre cette « craziness » de New-York, cette folie, ces mélanges de gratte-ciel qui se poussent, se chevauchent et semblent sortir littéralement de la terre comme certains cristaux qui poussent en hauteur comme des explosions. C’est l’idée que j’ai voulu produire ici: cette profusion de buildings qui sortent d’une même crevasse noire. Je fais encore une fois référence à un super-héro américain:cette fois: Superman qui craint la Kriptonite verte (représentée ici comme ces immeubles qui poussent en forme de cristaux)

Painting this series about New-York was truly a great experience! Because I’ve never seen this city, but I worked on photographs from a member of my family with his agreement, I felt free to change whatever I wanted changed about it! It was a freedom to re-invente the setting, to push some of the buildings to put another at their place… I felt free to not reproduce entirely the city as it was, so to move from reality; Besides, in this painting I wanted to convey the idea of a city growing from the black soil of earth. This effect of building growing like some crystal is a symbol that represents the Kriptonite that grows like some crystal; in reference to Superman! New-York is the city of dream, the city represented in most movies and for French people like me, NYC is the city of legends. All my paintings of NY are a tribute to America and the 7th art!
Après l’exubérance des tableaux précédents sur New-York , j’ai voulu la représenter dans le calme et la sérénité, totalement à l’opposé de la ville en réalité, puisque c’est une ville qui bouge, qui fait du bruit, où les sirènes des véhicules de secours côtoient les klaxons des voitures. La ville qui ne dort jamais semble recouverte d’un nuage de calme, d’une vapeur de poésie. En utilisant de l’acrylique et des encres j’ai été plus loin dans le sentiment d’irréalité et de rêve. Ce qui compte dans ma peinture sont les impressions, l’interprétation des villes tel que je les conçois. La série de New-York est faite à partir de photos avec l’accord de son propriétaire.

NY is a city of excess: noise, crowd… In the streets surrounded by buildings all taller than the others, people are overwhelmed by a feeling of movement, of liveliness of crazyness. In the series of « cities », after having represented the crazyness of the skyscrappers pushing one another, after the city at night with multi colors , bright and golden; this is a new representation of NY: calm and serene. as if the city has been surrounded by a white veil, all poetry and softness. New-York is a dream for the new comers, a dream for those who want to discover the entrance to the USA. For tourists, it’s the streets the architecture and the buildings they have seen in movies and TV series…
London est une ville qui bouge, par ses projets architecturaux sans cesse renouvelés. London est, pour moi, une ville de lumière, je l’interprète dans mes tableaux toujours de couleurs gaies, vives. Dans ce dernier tableau de Londres , je continue mon voyage pictural vers une ambiance plus floue, une atmosphère qui efface les lignes et la précision d’une scène urbaine. Je veux garder une image fugitive, je veux me promener dans un rêve.

Manhattan Gris brun La façon dont j’interprète les sujets se retrouve dans le style et les couleurs Autant Paris sera représenté avec des bleus parfois gris, Londres multicolore, Rome rose ou jaune très brillant, je conçois New-York comme un ensemble de couleurs fades et douces qui s’oppose à la folie de ces buildings les uns sur les autres à la recherche du soleil et du ciel. Chaque ville a une interprétation propre en fonction de la façon dont je la perçois. Cela se retrouve dans la couleur mais aussi dans le style: avec des petites touches rapides (Londres) des coups de pinceaux plus suggérés, plus expressionnistes (NY) et un style beaucoup plus proche de la réalité photographique (Paris).

New-york Manhattan; grey-brown NY exuberance, the mix between old and recent buildings, the craziness of the fullness. Every inches seem to be filled by concrete. The skyscrapers are pushing one another to reach the sky. I love the craziness of this series and the gentle colors that contrast the effect of lack of space. I’ve painted the city like I feel it not like I see it. This is a interpretation of my feeling with quick brushes of painting, the colors are greyish because it’s the way I interpret this city. If you compare with my feeling of London; often brightly coloured here the tones are more subtle.
New-York, de nuit se pare d’or: elle représente les premiers espoirs et les rêves des immigrants du siècle dernier qui pensaient que la ville était « pavée d’or ». NY brille de mille feux: ici le tableau est presque abstrait, je veux mettre en avant le rêve plutôt que la réalité. Les coups de pinceau sont imprécis, on sent une atmosphère plus qu’on ne la voit; Les lumières sont très présentes mais les couleurs douces estompent ce qui pourrait donner un effet violent. Une cire dorée donne un aspect lumineux sur certaines parties.

City of dreams and of hopes: the immigrants of the 19th Century thought that the streets of the city were paved with gold. The city is the first door to the USA and as said the song: « If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere »

C’est un voyage dans un film, une série TV, c’est l’histoire de l’Amérique, ce sont les portes du rêve américain; New-York c’est la grandiloquence des « skyscrappers » qui atteignent les étoiles, mais aussi les bruns-orangés des immeubles anciens qui ont fait l’histoire de cette ville. C’est une foule de personnes qui travaillent, voyagent et vivent sans se croiser. C’est l’anonymat d’une grande ville au parfum vénéneux mais envoûtant. New-York-Gotham city : l’ordre et le désordre, la beauté et la laideur: terre de contrastes. Ces contrastes sont représentés dans ce tableau par une atmosphère irréelle faite de touches imprécises (dans le bas du tableau) dans un ensemble très réaliste et parfois très précis. La précision, les petits détails représentent la réalité. Le contraste se fait aussi par les couleurs dans une atmosphère douce mais irréelle.

While I was painting it, I went on a trip in a movie, New-York is the city where you go shopping with Carry Bradshaw, you walk in Manhattan with Hanna and her sisters and close a deal with Gordon Gekko.
Paris, une journée de pluie. Deux touristes prennent un café à terrasse d’une café parisien sur la place de la Madeleine. L’intérieur du café est brillamment éclairé cependant l’atmosphère est douce et chaleureuse loin du tumulte parisien, des voitures et des travaux. Les couleurs chaudes adoucissent les couleurs froides du bar et forment un doux contraste. On est bien dans ce café, on est au chaud, on se sent protégé de la folie extérieure.

One rainy day on Paris, a couple of tourists is having some drink on the terasse of a parisian café. Although the café is brightly lit inside there is a warm and cosiness atmosphere about it. You feel comfortable and secure inside, far from the crazy and noisy life outside. I used the powerful contrast between the warm and cold colors to give a certain atmosphere. I loved this nice café I wanted to keep the feeling of cosiness alive.
