« Lorsque j’ai commencé cette peinture, j’y ai vu l’opposition entre le religieux et le profane; entre le monde ancien d’une cathédrale et le monde récent du pont du Millenium; entre la réalité et le décor de cinéma. mais en peignant cette cathédrale et ce pont, j’y ai vu quelque chose de plus fort: ces bras blancs du pont semblent accueillir les passants pour les mener à la cathédrale. Et en ces temps de crise sanitaire, de peur, de mort, j’y ai vu un signe de rapprochement et de protection. Par forcement religieux. Le ciel est d’un bleu éclatant, la peinture est lisse comme une protection; la cathédrale est baignée de lumière comme un signe d’un Dieu protecteur, les immeubles aux pieds sont ancrés dans la réalité avec leurs couleurs vives et leur architecture un peu laide: on est dans la réalité du quotidien. Les humains qui vont en direction de la cathédrale sont baignés d’un voile blanc : ils ne sont pas une entité réelle. Ce tableau est à la fois protecteur (les teintes bleues et blanches), les bras du pont qui s’ouvrent aux passants et nostalgique (les ombres noires des humains). »

Saint Paul Cathedral in London with the Millenium bridge.
The ancient world and the modern world are gathered together.

I’m not a religious person and at first I saw when I was painting the opposition between old time and recent times. Opposition between the religious and the non-believer.

While I was working on it, I saw something different: Saint Paul cathedral seemed to open its arms to the people and to welcome them to pray. In these times of fear and death, the episode of coronavirus, some people have turned towards religion to pray for themselves and others.

The cathedral is surrounded by a blue sky that protects it. The sky is smooth with no brush touch as usual: it’s a symbol of peace and calm. Something that smoothens the spirit.
The cathedral is obviously bathed in sun, like the circle of light surrounding some religious sculptures and paintings.
The buildings are darker and represent the reality: their base into the earth. And then, the arms of the bridge, light, bright and welcoming.
The people are not clearly defined, they are a bunch of impersonal humans, not the real topic of the painting.

The painting is peaceful and bright: like a protective bubble yet, anchored in reality.

Cette peinture des jours d’avant le coronavirus représente le charmant marché de Camden au nord de Londres, où l’on trouve entre autres ce petit coin d’Italie: Italian Alley. Les serveurs/serveuses sont italiens, parlent italiens et on peut y gouter un petit bout d’Italie au coeur de la cité londonienne.

Ce tableau d’après confinement fait suite à une période sombre, il se veut plus gai, plus joyeux, c’est une invitation au voyage, puisque l’on ne peut pas encore se déplacer au moment où j’écris ces mots. C’est un peu de Londres et d’Italie dans son salon…

L’atmosphère de ce lieu est bien connu des chercheurs de trésors qui fouillent dans les vêtements et les pièces diverses des années 40 à 70…
J’aime cette atmosphère chaude et confortable qui nous ramène dans le passé, les odeurs de cuir et de bois, les couleurs vives qui nous assaillent et les odeurs de « fish n’ chips » et autres saveurs qui nous chatouillent le nez à l’extérieur.
C’est un lien très touristique en période normale, évidemment, mais ce théâtre de la vie urbaine vaut le détour.

Cette quadrilogie de couleur et de chaleur me ramène à cette ville que j’aime particulièrement pour son exubérance

In an century where everything is changing, and changing quickly, there are still some places where nothing has changed: a thing of the past in a middle of a very modern and moving city: London.
There you can buy vinyl’s from the seventies, dress with forties’ skirts and jackets and listen to sixties’ music.
There is a special atmosphere for treasure hunters, smells of wood and leather.
Outside there are smells of fish and chips and curry that invite you to travel in others parts of the world.
It’s a time machine…

La dernière de la série des oeuvres de confinement:

Encore une fois, on sent dans cette peinture la force de l’idée d’emprisonnement que ressent le peintre pendant cette période particulière
Ce n’est pas une oeuvre joyeuse, même si Londres est ma ville de coeur, ici, c’est un ressenti de la douleur, de cette crise qui s’est abattue sur le monde. Londres est représentée en force, en violence dans des tons de rouges et de briques qui contrastent vivement avec la douceur du ciel bleu. Elle est encore plus brutale que les deux autres oeuvres sur le même thème « Sicily, London » et « Public library ».
La peinture est peinte sur une toile avec des collages de papier sur lesquels sont écrits « Lockdown-selfisolation-coronavarus »
Ces papiers maintes fois recouverts ont presque disparu sont les couches successives de peintures, néanmoins on peut en voir un vestige sur la partie gauche du tableau, et on peut voir les traces de papier qui donne à la peinture un aspect irrégulier.
Ce n’est définitivement pas une peinture « légère » et « jolie » , on sent la force, la violence du thème. On n’est plus proche de l’expressionnisme que du figuratif.

Lockdown Harrington gardens: last of the series on lockdown and coronavirus (March-April 2020)

Another example here of the feeling of the painter during this peculiar time in the world: a feeling of oppression, of imprisonment and of violence.

This painting is neither « beautiful » or « light »: it’s a painting of fear, violence and desperation.

The violence of the reds against the light touch of the blue skies gives an idea of enfermement. It’s the idea that we are in self-isolation and beyond that we are facing a future that frightens us.
It’s more an expressionism painting than figurative really.
It’s an expression of a feeling.
some parts of the painting have been covered by bits of paper on which was written: « lockdown self-isolation coronavirus ». the paper has been covered by layers and layers of painting as usual on my work, only a tiny bit of paper still is visible on a left part of the painting.
This bits of paper make the painting rough not smooth on the touch, with rough brush strokes on it.
